Family Costume Ideas

Updated: Nov 10, 2023

I do love me a good Halloween family theme! It certainly is easier to dress up the family when you have little ones, but if you choose some thing that is funny and not embarrassing, you could get your teenagers to wear it too. The rule in our house when it comes to costumes is for Halloween night you can be whatever you and your friends want to dress up as, but for our annual Halloween party we dress as a family.

I'm going to talk about how to make costumes and not break the bank, but if your here to just get some ideas of costumes, you can scroll to the bottom of this post for different family costume ideas.

Now I will say, I am not one to go out and order expensive costumes for the entire family. I take ideas that I see and re-create them in an inexpensive manner. Between ordering pieced out items on Amazon or going to my local thrift store, I try to spend as little money as I can as I know most of the time costumes don’t get resused much.

For an example, this is last year’s a league of their own theme.

The costumes that I found online just to order and be done, ran about $80- $100 each. No way not happening for one night. So I’ll share with you my favorite way to make a costume look as if it was ordered as well as be able to personalize it.

My biggest tip here: Iron-on printable transfers. I will link these here as I absolutely love using these! Just downloading a logo and then simply print it on my printer, cutting it out and then iron it on the shirt or jacket or whatever the logo needs to be placed on.

Here is a link for iron on transfers bought through Amazon:

I just downloaded the logo and printed them on the iron on sheets

For A League of their own outfits, I bought these cute light pink dresses for very inexpensive at H&M. I think they were $9.99 each. I then ironed on the league of their own logo. For the belt, I just bought belt material off of Amazon, and ordered the clasp also in a pack for very inexpensive. I ordered the plain hats as a six pack on Amazon, and also did an iron on transfer of the logo. Then we just needed the socks, of course those were Amazon as well.

Being that I have for girls, it was easy for me to make five of the Rockford peaches dresses for us. Now my husband was the coach, a.k.a. Tom Hanks. For his outfit, same thing. From Amazon, I bought the most inexpensive men’s baseball jersey I could find, as well as some baseball pants . I ironed on the logo to his jersey to match our costumes. I was also able to personalize our costumes putting our ages on the back instead of a jersey number so we could look back and remember how old we were when we did this.

For the rest of this post, I'll share more of a round up a photos from different themes that we have done with our own four daughters. It’s a fun stroll down memory lane and hopefully it sparks some ideas that your own family can use.

So here’s the round up, starting from most recent, to when my kids were little…

2022 A League of our own

2021 Cruella

2019 Arabian Nights

2018 Greatest Showman

2017 Dia de los Muertos

2016 The Elderly and our nurses

2015 Life on a Farm

2014 Dead Dolls

2011 Party Animals

2010 Masquerade Ball

My advice to you, participate in a family halloween theme. I know it's hard. I know that some family members will complain. But, looking back on the photos is priceless and making these memories are what life is all about. We have been there, and I am so grateful to get to look back for having done that.

Xo,

Mama
