Rancho Passiflora- why we named our home

Our home is a multi-generational property. The home that my husband grew up in became our family home as well in 2013.

A quick backstory - my father-in-law had always mentioned to my husband. This plan that he had for the family property and then in 2013 it became a reality. My husband, a general contractor and homebuilder by trade had the perfect skill set to turn the single-family home that he was raised in into a multi-generational property. The home as it was originally was a tutor-style single-family home and it was beautiful. Built-in the 1980's however, its roof was starting to fail, windows needed to be replaced, and general items as you would find on any home we’re coming to their lifespan. As my in-laws neared retirement, they didn’t want to give up living on this beautiful piece of property with so much land and a ton of upkeep. If we built another home on the property and remodeled the original home, this would not only allow them to stay on the property in a brand new home, but would also reduce expenses as we would then take over 2/3 of all the payments after the build-out. Really a win-win for all of us.

I will talk more in another post about the dynamics of multi-generational, living and how we have made it work very well for the past 10 years. It’s been a blessing for all of us and I would recommend it. But let’s get back to why we named our home.

In 2020 I finally had been wrapping up the degree that I started before I was married. I had never finished obtaining my bachelor's degree with something that had highly bothered me for years. How would I be able to make my kids go to college when I hadn’t finished myself? So back to school I went and one of my courses was a social media marketing course. I needed a project to market and decided to focus on our home and how it was a multi-generational property.

So we need a name. We live in a town called Rancho Santa Fe, and we grow many passion fruits on her property. The name of a passionfruit vine is Passiflora. There we had it, Rancho Passiflora.

I made a logo for our property and an Instagram account and began documenting life at her home not only for the course that I was in but also it turned into a great way to document how our kids, my husband and I, his grandmother, and his parents cohabitated on the same piece of property in harmony.

Above, I have included the link to that Instagram account. For many years after my class is over I stop documenting, but have recently began as it’s more of a keepsake for our family to be able to look at what a great home wife my kids had.

Giving your home a name is something that makes it more like an

estate. In the area that we live, many homes are actually named. You don’t have to live at the Biltmore to name your home. Giving your home her name just added another element to all of the great memories that have been made across all of our generations at this piece of property that we have had the wonderful opportunity to call home. We been there, and we’re still doing that.
