What to plant in March in Southern California

I’m already itching for spring over here and I cannot wait for my garden to be producing again.

So time to get on it here’s what I’m planting at the end of February here, and Southern California.
Green beans
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Yams
Potatoes
Sunflowers
Zucchini
Now I do start my vegetables from seed. I honestly just buy the seed packets from the dollar tree that are four for a dollar and yes they actually do work. My yams and potatoes I do not start from seed. I just wait until I have some that have started to sprout in my pantry and I just put them in the soil. They really do grow. If you don’t already grow potatoes, it is so satisfying because they are so easy, and I swear they do taste better. These you don’t have to start over and over. Once you get an area in your garden that has some potatoes still in the soil or some yams, they do sprout time and time again. I will do a separate post strictly on potatoes because it is a pretty cool process.

Now, when starting seeds, it is important that you use good soil. I typically buy a large bag of miracle Gro, and then I reuse the same growing containers over and over. I like to set up a little table that is within view of my back door so that I do not forget to water these. My garden does have irrigation, but my growing table. Well, that’s just me and the hose.
Here’s what my set up looks like when I first start my seeds in some starter containers:

Notice the containers and the popsicle sticks. As much as you think you will remember what is planted in which container, you won't. You need to label your containers. A popsicle stick works great.

Another Tip: Write your name on your gloves. Others will pick them up! Now, If you plan ahead now, your garden come May will look like this:

It does take a little bit of time, but with a little bit of planning ahead, it is well worth come spring when you have an active garden and you’re able to pick your own food. I might’ve been there, and I do know that.
